So That Explains It
Michael Crowley has
a smart piece in this week's New Republic about the political influence of Michael Crichton on the Bush presidency.
Crichton, of course, is the author of thrillers such as
The Andromeda Strain and
Jurassic Park, but over the years, as Crowley shows, he's become increasingly anxious to get respect not just for his sales, but for his ideas. Thus, his latest book,
State of Fear, is one long diatribe against people who believe that global warming exists.
What's really scary about this? Apparently President Bush summoned Crichton to the White House for an hour-long meeting, and on the subject of global warming, the two men were apparently in total agreement....
I don't mean to sound like a left-wing dreamer...but wouldn't the world be a better place if W. put as much effort into fighting global warming as he has into fighting a disastrous war in the Middle East?
